Endearing River Dolphins in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, the largest city and capital of Cambodia, is a welcome change from the uniformity and monotony of many modern cities. Magnificent colonial buildings, elegant wide avenues and a tranquil riverfront with a multitude of restaurants and cafes are among the attractions that draw many international visitors each year.

There are several highlights for tourists in Phnom Penh which should be on the activity list of any visitor. The Sisowath Quay, a well preserved avenue running along the river banks is a pleasant sight with a carnival atmosphere. The Royal Palace and its two majestic pagodas always impress the beholder. Other places of interest include the National Museum of Cambodia and the Wat Phnom temple and park.

River dolphins are one of the notable sights to be experienced in Cambodia. Now an endangered species, the Irrawaddy dolphin native to the Mekong River is a fascinating and intriguing creature. The Irrawaddy dolphin resembles the Beluga but is in fact most closely related to the orca, or killer whale. Adults are about 8 feet long and weigh more than 130 kg. The lifespan is approximately 30 years. Sexual maturity is thought to be reached at 7 to 9 years, and the species has a gestation period of 14 months.

Irrawaddy dolphins interact with specialized sounds that are used for echolocation and unique to the species. Their diet consists of fish and fish eggs, various crustaceans and other river creatures. The dolphins have been noted to emit streams of water from their mouths, probably to release excess water taken in when consuming fish. The dolphins are noted for their tendency to dive frequently, sometimes lasting for up to 12 minutes. Irrawaddy dolphins usually live in groups of several individuals.

For travellers who desire a Phnom Penh hotel, the imposing Raffles Hotel Le Royal will exceed expectations. The leading five star hotel Cambodia, the Raffles exudes comfort, luxury and style combining old world charm and modern amenities.
